Why turn-based RPGs belong on your phone
For years people insisted RPGs didn't work on mobile. Too much menu, too many hours, too fiddly. Playing Emberwind Saga this month reminded me how wrong that take always was.
Turn-based combat is naturally pausable. You can stop between any two decisions and lose nothing, which is exactly how you actually play on a phone — in fragments, between other things.
The trick good ones pull off is respecting your time. Generous save points, short battles, and story you can put down without dread. When a game gets that right, ten minutes on a train adds up to a whole adventure.
If you've been sleeping on the genre, start with something that leans tactical. Positioning-based fights give you something to chew on even in short bursts.
