Cozy games aren't lazy design
It's easy to dismiss cozy games as simple, but spending time with Sprout Street changed my mind about how much thought goes into keeping things gentle.
Every system in a good cozy game is tuned to remove friction. Growth timers that match a daily routine, requests that never feel demanding, progress that's always visible. That balance is hard to hit.
What makes it work is character. Neighbours with moods and quirks turn a plain trading loop into something you look forward to. Without that, it's just a spreadsheet with plants.
Cozy doesn't mean empty. The best ones just hide their machinery behind a smile.
